What are your responsibilities in a typical day? |
"Putting flyers up on boards. Checking mailbox to see if any new flyers are in there. Talking to residents. Responding to calls from the front desk to do little things that might come up such as lock outs. This is just a day thing. There is a lot more to do being an RA." ~Mabel |
"I make sure I am available for my residents by keeping my door open. I mentor, listen, provide advice and guidance. I also am in charge of providing support for S.O.S. Staff and grading papers for the IST program/class." ~ Jennifer |
"They are vast and varying, but a typical day revolves around general policy enforcement with things such as noise, vandalism and improper disposal of garbage. Many times throughout the day I am called upon as a reference guid for assorted phone numbers, dates, and times of events, and the occassional academic advisement. Also, a general check on the well-being of residents and co-workers consistently shapes my day." ~ Andrew |
"If I am not on call then I have to be in the building by 6:30 b/c I have to do rounds then I have to sit at the desk from 7 to 10. Then I do another round. Rounds are when you go on every floor and make sure everything is okay and the doors are locked. Then you have to do rounds again so you have to stay up. On a weekday you do three rounds and on a weekend you do four rounds. I also have to wear a shirt that was brought for all the RA's on my staff when I'm on call." ~Anon |
"My responsibilities in a typical day is to make sure my floor is cooperating, and everybody is ok." ~Anon 2 |
"On a typical day, my duties include ensuring that the building's residents are comfortable , and that their college lives are going well. I point them in the right direction when they need something and connect them with the resources they need to be successful. I also handle administrative tasks and other duties as prescribed by the Hall Director." ~Barry |

"I get to meet new people along with my own personal safe room."~ Anon. |
"My favorite part of being an RA is watching my residents develop and grow, as well as meeting so many different kinds of people throughout the course of my day." ~ Barry |
What is your least favorite part of being a RA/GRM? |
"Hanging up so many flyers and having to check my mailbox so many times because there is always something in there to put up.l" ~Mabel |
"My least favorite part of being a GRM is learning to balance work, school work and friends." ~Jennifer |

"When I am on call and can't leave the building to go out to late night or for a meeting." ~Anon. |
"I have to be on call once a week and erratic residents that don't want to listen. Notable to leave on time for vacation and arriving early for school." ~Anon. 2 |

What is one piece of advice you would offer to incoming students who are considering becoming a RA/GRM? |
"Make sure you manage your time wisely. Keep a calendar or a to do list to make sure everythingis done on time; more importantly that you are not doing your school work because your or not planning things out; you are an RA but also a student. Don't do anything you tell your residents not to do. Be a role model." ~Mabel |
"Make sure to spend time with your friends and take time for yourself." ~Jennifer |
|
"Don't rush in to it! Make sure your party days are over, and you are able to successfully manage all of your time. As an RA you are held on a pedastal and you define how high or low it is. Also, the time and energy required are not worth the money that is payed, so you must commit to something beyond dollar signs." ~Andrew |
"I would tell them that they should make a schedule to include RA deadlines such as paperwork and meetings. This makes it easier for them to remember things so that their paperwork is due on time." ~Anon. |
"Time management,. Have alot of civil responsibilities. If you don't have yourself together then do not apply. There is alot of responsibilities that come with the territory. So make sure that it is something that you are dedicated to and serious about." ~Anon. 2 |
"The job is yours. You can't expect things to just happen. Make the job you own- the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. It is very rewarding and provides great oppurtunities for you to grow- if you wan to be..." ~Barry |
